Diel vertical migration of a Southern Ocean euphausiid, Euphausia triacantha, and its metabolic response to consequent short-term temperature changes

چکیده

Diel vertical migration is a widespread behaviour amongst zooplankton, yet its effect on the rate at which individuals respire remains poorly understood. To address this, we investigated of short-term temperature change respiration Euphausia triacantha , common component Southern Ocean zooplankton and prominent migrator. We found to vary in response size, with value 0.84 for scaling coefficient, b . When scaled varied strongly transitory change, ranging from 0.37 1.65 µl O 2 mg dry weight (DW) - h -1 between 0.17 4.74°C, resulting Q 10 3.6. This higher than by other studies examining euphausiids, including those taking multi-species perspective. indicates that E. shows little compensation during exposure temperatures normally encountered migration. Furthermore, it distinct metabolic cost diel (DVM) when substantive changes are over course transit. temporal variability has important implications how community estimated, our understanding DVM behaviour. Our results also have particular relevance estimating flux sequestration respiratory products, such as dissolved carbon dioxide, within ocean interior.

Diel vertical migration: Ecological controls and impacts on the biological pump in a onedimensional ocean model

[1] Diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton and micronekton is widespread in the ocean and forms a fundamental component of the biological pump, but is generally overlooked in global models of the Earth system. We develop a parameterization of DVM in the ocean and integrate it with a size-structured NPZD model. We assess the model’s ability to recreate ecosystem and DVM patterns at three w...

Diel vertical migration behaviour of Calanus hyperboreus

Samples historically collected and analysed by the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas were used to examine temporal patterns in the near-surface abundance of copepodite stages V and V1 Calanus hyperboreus (n = a total of 32836 samples; mean latitude of samples = 54" N. SD = 6.7'). The occurrence of CV and V1 C. hyperboreus was largely restricted to sampl...

Genetic heterogeneity in euphausiid populations: Euphausia krohnii

Genetic heterogeneity of samples of Euphausia krohnii and Nematoscelis megalops collected from a 6,000-km* area in western North Atlantic Slope Water was investigated by electrophoretic assay of allozymic variability at eight enzyme loci. Both species exhibited significant among-sample heterogeneity of allozyme frequencies. Genetic distances between samples were large for intraspecific comparis...
